Domain Names

I have a couple of domain names listed for sale on Sedo, and one in particular which gets a lot of attention. Namely: www.pokeronline.co.uk which I get almost daily offers of around $200 or so for. Anyway I’m sad to say that I have just turned down an offer of $42,000 with a potential buyer after a couple of weeks of negotiation.

So why turn down $42,000 I hear you say? Well I think it’s worth more. The reason being that according to Overture the term “online poker” is searched for a lot more than just “poker” on it’s own. And as my domain name contains both those terms I think it has potential. Of course people have many different opinions on whether a domain name can effect search engine rankings. But in my personal experience it does, quite a lot in fact.

Another reason I am selling the domain is that I have been working on a new poker site which can be found at www.poker.org.uk. It’s still early days but the site is already generating good traffic and earning money. And as I’ve had serious offers before for Poker Online I’m sure that more will come along, and I’m in no hurry to sell.

Domain names make a huge difference to search engine rankings, mainly because most people link to a site using the name of the site as anchor text.

Personally, I would have taken $42k because the order of the words in the domain also make a difference. But then, I probably need the money more than you too ;) lol

Is poker.org.uk getting traffic from search engines already? Or did you mean PPC?

I hear what you are saying Rich but in my experience (and judging my my logs) the order of the 2 words doesn’t have much effect. Anyway I’m in no rush to sell the domain so will just hold on tight in the hope that it will appreciate.

Yes, poker.org.uk is getting traffic 100% via SEO. A world first for me!

Hi Kieron,

I own internet-bingo.co.uk and I’m going to eventually make I site around it. After ready your blog I thought maybe selling it would create some capital for the company. However, just checked my TD a/c and have made a tidy profit share this month on just 6 people.
So my question is, how much do you think it would be worth and how do you go about working it out?

Mike

I wish I was in a position where I could *afford* to turn down $42k! ;)

Kieron, had any better luck with this domain yet? I think domain registering is simply a waiting game: domains are virtual real estate big time, and the day will come when your domains will get their asking price, no matter how high!
