Pay-Per-Call

I received this package today from Miva. It turns out to be a promotional item for their new Pay-Per-Call product. The lid of the box says “What is the difference between pay-per-click and pay-per-call?” Then you open the box and……

The box opens to reveal a (real) 10p coin and a £2 coin.

The reason for this is to highlight the minimum pay-per-click bid price (10p) and the minimum pay-per-call bid price (£2). In other words a 2000% difference. Then as a Miva publisher I am urged to contact them about implementing pay-per-call to my existing pay-per-click ads.

So apart from the neat marketing idea (I’m a big fan of “gimmicky” promotional material like this) is pay-per-call a good idea? The rationale behind it is that advertisers who have a complex product to sell can pay Miva to display a phone number when their traditional ad is clicked on. An example of this could be life insurance whereby you may have a lot of questions to ask the advertiser.

Good idea? Yes I think so. This has been launched to advertisers in the financial arena first of all, which makes sense. But expect it to roll out to other categories soon. Will it replace pay-per-click ads? I doubt it, I think they can compliment one another nicely. And with Google recently launching Google Talk and eBay purchasing Skype I think we will see many more advances in the way we interact over the web.

I read an interesting article this week in VoIP Planet about pay per call and how companies like Google and eBay may start to incorporate it into their business models. http://www.voipplanet.com/trends/article.php/3551361
