How I Work: Kieron Donoghue

Inspired by How I Work: Bill Gates over on CNN.com I thought I would do a similar feature on this blog. And seeing as I am often compared *cough* to Bill (and because I’m bored of working all day) I thought it would be a bit of fun.

So here is Bill’s desk:

In the article Bill goes on to say that email is his communication of choice, he doesn’t use much paper and has 3 monitors. Joking aside I found it an interesting read, especially in how he manages his tasks and overcomes issues like staying focused.

Anyway, here’s a pic of my desk:

I’ve numbered the things that are most important to me as follows:

1. Espresso: I’m *useless* without an espresso or two in the morning (or throughout the day for that matter) to get me going. I invested in a Gaggia bean-to-cup coffee machine when I first started working from home so I would always have some quality coffee to hand.

2. Notepad: Old School all the way for me. My notepad is my next essential item. I always start a new day with a new to-do list that gradually grows or shrinks throughout the day depending on how productive I am. Anything that doesn’t get done gets carried over to the next day.

3. Mobile: If you ever need to get hold of me don’t use the business line please use this number. More often than not I’m out and about but always have my mobile on me.

4. PC: Still using 1 monitor for now but when I upgrade all my kit later in the year I’m looking to use 2 Dell 24″ widescreen babies. I like the idea of using 1 just for email and another for other stuff. I may even do a “Bill” and get 3.

5. PDA/Smartphone: My business line is actually a mobile so I can keep tasks and emails up to date when I’m out and about. 9 times out of 10 I forget it though!

6. View: I couldn’t work in an environment with no windows. Luckily my study overlooks the back garden which is great for “inspiration”!

7. Memorabilia: From left to right I have a signed limited edition CD of Snoop Dogg’s “Rhythm & Gangsta The Masterpiece” CD. A signed photo of Macy Gray and a very special Platinum Disc to commemorate 1,000,000 copies of “Purple Rain” by Prince. If you could see the rest of my study you would see a huge signed poster from Christina Aguilera, a signed Alicia Keys photo and signed Gwen Stefani photo.

8. A Cuddly Camel: Why not?

9. Video iPod: Great little gadget, I just like to look at it.

10. Comfy Chair: Very important if you want to be comfortable all day.

So there you go, I hope you enjoyed a trip round my desk, I guess I’ll get back to work now!

What I’m listening to right now: Rihanna - “SOS” (on my iPod)

I can’t really take a picture of mine, because it’s.. my settee! But to contribute something, check out this totally insane setup: http://www.flickr.com/photos/visualseed/86410009/ — 3 * 30″ screens!

BTW, I like your blog and have been subscribed for a while now, but ever thought about turning the Blogger login requirement off? I only have a Blogger login from years ago but don’t use it anymore and most people who’d be likely to comment these days are probably not Blogger users. Just a suggestion.. :)

Great post. I love getting a sneak peak into other people’s work environment.

Since getting a wireless laptop, I have to be honest, I work mostly from the sofa ;) I have a Dell 24″ widescreen up-stairs, but it’s now sitting there pretty much redundant. Perfect condition, no dead pixels, boxed with cables and driver CD. Yours for £550 + £25 p&p. Interested? :)

Kieron

Love the desk and articles as usual.

Where do you get your coffee beans from? My mail order side of things at http://www.vendesent.co.uk has been growing lately so I would happily give you a good deal.

I’m considering getting one of the 24″ dells, as I’ve heard lots of good things about them. You can get them for around £400 direct from dell if you go through the right routes - a bargain.

Plus a few % back from TradeDoubler ;) (even better!)
