Google AdWords Editor

I’ve read about the Google AdWords Editor in various forums/blogs on the web but was pleased to receive my invite to try it for myself today. Here’s what the email said:

“Thank you for advertising with Google AdWords. As part of our ongoing effort to improve your AdWords experience, we’d like to invite you to try AdWords Editor, our free, downloadable account management application.

We’re currently offering this beta program only to a select number of AdWords advertisers. Based on your current AdWords account activity, we believe you’d benefit from the ease and flexibility AdWords Editor offers. Designed especially for users with large accounts, AdWords Editor allows you to download your campaigns, easily make individual or bulk changes, then post your changes to AdWords.”

Well I downloaded it and entered my Google AdWords username and password and then I was off. It took a few minutes to download all of my account information (my fault for having tens of thousands of keywords) but then I was up and running.

I’ve only been playing with it for an hour or so but my first impression is that it is very impressive, not only that but really useful. I guess the biggest selling point is that you can navigate and search your account much faster than doing it live within your AdWords interface online.

To test it out I selected one of my larger Campaigns with about 20 individual Ad Groups within and around 30,000 keywords. The first thing to note is that the interface itself is a bit like Windows Explorer with a main window and another window (or window pane) to the right that displays the contents of the directory you select on the left - so well done to Google for going for simple and familiar.

Anyway you can manipulate the data within your accounts in pretty much any way imaginable, all with the click of a column tab or directory button. The idea is that you can then make any changes you want to your account offline (nice and fast) then simply press a button to upload your account changes to AdWords and job done.

As well as changing CPC’s etc you can also edit keywords and even change the text of your ads. Very clever stuff.

So well done Google, I’m all for anything that makes my life simpler and this is definitely a great resource. If anyone gets the invite then please let me know your thoughts.

What I’m listening to right now: Sergio Mendes - “Timeless” What a find! If you like R&B of any shape or form then buy this CD. Sergio is a Brazilian composer/arranger and has been on the scene for years. Most famous for his Bossa Nova, Samba and Latin Jazz styles he has joined forces with - wait for it…The Black Eyed Peas, Erykah Badu, Stevie Wonder, Will.I.Am, Jill Scott, John Legend, India Arie and Justin Timberlake to name but a few. Cool. Buy the album for no other reason than to hear Sergio and the Black Eyed Peas version of the infamous “Mas Que Nada” (usually played on TV for clips of Brazil playing in the world cup).

I just bought it based on your recommendation. A link to the iTunes Music Store would have you got you a few pennies commission, but never mind :) Thanks for that! In return I recommend his ‘Brasileiro’ album. It’s a bit rawer though.

Nice one mate! I’m listening to the CD now full blast with the sun shining, all good! BTW the track with John Legend is class!

I did think about putting affiliate links on this blog but just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Just doesn’t seem right somehow :-)

Kieron, I reckon you’d LOVE pandora.com. I’ve not been so impressed since someone showed me how to be a silent trainspotter with Shazam. You stick in an artist or track you love, and it picks out a constant stream of stuff in the same ‘vibe’. Spent all day playing with it and it’s awesome.
