SEO….result!

Back in July, I launched a new project. The aim was to tap into the growing online bingo market with my new bingo site. This was to be a first for me as it is the first time I had ever launched a site without relying on PPC to market it.

Now the main reason that I didn’t use PPC is that Google don’t allow paid ads that direct people to a site where they can gamble online. MSN and Yahoo! do however but I thought it would be an interesting challenge to see if I could make the site a success without using and PPC activity at all. And as those who know me will testify, I know nothing at all about SEO, but hey I love a challenge.

Luckily I had acquired the domain Bingo.org.uk a few years ago so I do count that as a help towards my first tentative steps into the world of SEO. So as well as using the domain I adopted some quite basic SEO tactics, no black hat or white hat here :-) just good old fashioned text book SEO.

Amazingly enough, within a matter of a couple of weeks MSN and Yahoo! were listing the site in the top 5 (sometimes 1 or 2) for various bingo terms. Great! Traffic was starting to come in and although volumes were relatively low, the traffic was converting to sales.

Then, just today I was looking through my stats and I noticed quite a bit of traffic coming from Google. Fantastic!! A further delve into the log files shows that I’m number 6 on Google for “Bingo”!! Yay!

So the moral of the story?….SEO is easy.

Only kidding, I know SEO is a dark art which I could never begin to understand fully. But with a bit of luck and research, results can be achieved.

Congratulations Kieron, must be great to see all that hard work pay off finally - it’s so frustrating when you find yourself doing well in Yahoo and MSN but Google just doesn’t seem to want to know!

How many backlinks and of what quality did you point to your bingo site? how extensive has your link building been?

Wow, that is a stunning result considering you’ve only been working on the site since July! Nice going!

Now let’s hope it stays there, or improves ;)

Well done. It’s a nice looking site.

Couldn’t find your site at first but then realised that you’re on first page in google.co.uk UK pages filter (not google.com). Google toolbar seems to default to the .com search results.

Looks like the (presumably paid for) link from joyandsorrows.co.uk might have helped??

I suspect your sites forum helps too.

Hope it stays there for you!

Nice one - will be hassling you for your SEO tips! Interested to read you get traffic from that position (although imo you should take the # with the UK filter off - so you’re 13th at the mo)

We’re 3 below that but the traffic from that position is well… well it’s not as exciting as your blog post ;o)

Kieron, do you think the fact that the domain name is bingo.org.uk made much of a difference?

I am having a discussion with some SEO “experts” at the moment, and they reckon the domain name doesn’t make much difference. I don’t agree and think it does.

Your has no backlinks (according to google anyway!). So I reckon your site is proof that a keyword domain name does make a big difference!
