Prince, live at 3121 Las Vegas - 19th January 2007

When working out how to spend my time in Las Vegas last week, top of my list was the opportunity to see Prince play in concert. So I booked the VIP package for myself, Frostie, Jess and Paul which consisted of a 6 course meal in Prince’s restaurant followed by VIP champagne tables up close and personal at the gig itself.

We arrived at 8pm for the meal which we all agreed was fantastic, delicious and very well presented. I went so far as to take a picture of the desert with my camera phone (yes it was that impressive) but have since managed to lose it. Anyway, the food and drink were great and we left just after 10pm to get in line for the main event.

3121 club
As we had champagne table tickets that meant no queueing for us, so we went straight to the front of the line. There, a friendly doorman told us that the concert was being recorded tonight so strictly no cameras or recording devices allowed in. No problem, and within minutes we were sat at a table waiting for the man himself to come on stage. The club itself is circular with the stage located at the top of the circle as it were, the dancefloor is in the middle and the VIP tables are above in a raised position all around the dancefloor. The club only holds 1500 people so everyone was close to the stage and got a great view of the gig. Entertainment was provided by the fantastic DJ Rashida who blew me away with her mix of old school funk, hip-hop, Prince and soul. She was awesome and played exactly my kind of music, if I wasn’t so excited to see Prince I could have listened to her all night.

DJ Rashida
Just after midnight DJ Rashida stopped playing and Prince appeared on the giant video screens. It was a recording of another gig where he was entertaining the crowd with a call and respond version of the classic “DMSR”. So there we were signing along when the The Twinz appeared to the left and right of the stage to the first few bars of “3121″. We all went mad, then slowly the curtains raised and there was Prince and his band playing “3121″. Fantastic! And I must say that I really get that record now, hearing it live has put in into perspective for me.

To be honest I can’t really remember much of the gig but some of the highlights were a brand new take on “Girls and Boys”, maybe a 10 minute version of “Purple Rain”, a huge jam to “Pass the Peas” where he got some of the audience on stage. When he came of the stage, ran past us all, shook every body’s hand and then stood on my chair to dance :) Best song of the night goes to the amazingly powerful version he did of “U Got The Look” just before the encore. He played it faster than the album version and just how I thought it always should be played, absolutely awesome.

Speaking of encore’s, he came back on to his own version of Gnarles Barkley’s “Crazy”. Cool. And then finished with the brilliant “Get on The Boat” from the 3121 album.

Out of the 4 of us who went, 2 weren’t Prince fans at all, but afterwards said that it was one of the best gigs they had ever seen. Just like I predicted :-)

What I’m listening to right now: Prince - “3121″

Now I would have paid good money to be there. I don’t get round to listening to much of him these days but I’ll start having to get my iPod off shuffle and selecting his tracks again.

There’s nothing like a good groove when you’re working!

Glad you enjoyed it!

Kieran, Just to say thank you very much for a fantastic evening out. It was a really swanky evening & brilliant concert which I totally enjoyed.

Great post, Saw him on the Diamonds & Pearls tour in Paris, still one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen.

Once again you’ve given me a new Pandora.com channel and broken the back of that mid-afternoon grey patch.
