How not to pitch for business

I received this email the other day, the perfect example of how not to pitch to someone. Can anyone spot the senders error?

Dear ukoffer.com team,

I have been browsing through UkOffer.co.uk, reading up on what the website is about, and looking at various sections of the site.

I represent DealsLocally.co.uk, which is UK’s First Directory of Deals, Special Offers, and Discounts – consumer’s free resource for local bargains. The site has only officially launched mid-Q1, and has grown substantially in a short period of time.

I would not want to waist a lot of your time, and thus I will be very brief. In essence, I am looking at establishing partnership deals with websites that are connected to consumer advice on money saving issues, and your site fits the category perfectly. In the very basic form, I would be looking for a bi-lateral banner/link exchange, other on-site promotions, inclusion in news-letters, etc. I will be very glad to discuss other ways of partnering if this would be of interest to UkOffer.co.uk.

Please let me know if this is of interest to you or your colleagues, and whether you will be able to help.

Thank you for your time.

Kind Regards,

Dmitry @ DealsLocally.co.uk

    He misspelled waste as waist.

Well the point is that I own ukoffer.com and not ukoffer.co.uk. He starts the email to “ukoffer.com team” then switches to ukoffer.co.uk, which isn’t my site. I’m sorry but you need to do a whole lot better than this to get someones attention. And I won’t even go into when networks do it ;)

I had one recently where they contacted me through my site contact, did the whole spiel on looked through and liked our stuff etc. The usual cut and paste. However, they had forgotten to change the name of the site in the email, so the whole thing was pitched at a site that I didn’t even own. It’s a pain. :)

Is the other mistake that he’s pitching to his competition and that he isn’t the 1st directory if he’s only just started??

Why would you send your customers to a competitor??

Ah, this type of email is all too familiar with me. Incorrect URLs and spelling mistakes do not encourage me to investigate a business proposal!

Kieran- This is a bit of topic but i saw you on this list which has been going around http://www.conversionrater.com/index.php/2007/04/24/web-revenue-blog-rankings-april-update/

I found it through john chow dot com. I was amazed that you made it to that list. Being a bit cheeky i checked you web stats thru some stats counter and i was blown away that you have such a massive audience. well done you

Thanks for your kind words Sharon :)

    One other thing…

The phrase “I do not intend to waist (sic) a lot of your time” means, surely, that you do intend to waste some of your time.
