Apple iPhone or Nokia N95? Which is best?

iphone-versus-nokian95.jpg

Reasons I think the Apple iPhone is cool:

1. Have you seen it? Sleek, simple, black and very sexy.
2. Slim: Only 11.6 mm thick compared to the chunky Nokia N95 at 21 mm thick.
3. Screen size: Not only does the iPhone have a 3.5 inch touchscreen compared to 2.6 inches on the N95 but the iPhone has a glass screen whereas the Nokia has a cheapo plastic screen.
4. Talk time: 8 hours on the iPhone. 4 hours on the Nokia N95.
5. iTunes: iTunes is what I use to play my music on my PC. Also my iPod. So it will be cool to sync with an iPhone and have my music collection at my fingertips.
6. The interface: Have you seen the TV ads? Or this video from Apple? The iPhone interface looks awesome, what other device lets you “pinch” and “unpinch” using your fingertips?
7. Unlimited access to any of The Cloud’s 7,500 Wi-Fi hot spots. How cool is that?
8. Visual voicemail: Why has nobody thought of this earlier?
9. Web browsing: The version of Safari for the iPhone is by far and away the best mobile browser - ever.
10. iTunes music store for the iPhone, Google Maps, Stocks and Weather: Cool sites/apps all optimised for your new shiny iPhone.

Reasons I think the Nokia N95 is cool:

1. It has a 5MP camera, the iPhone has a 2MP camera.
2. It has GPS, the iPhone doesn’t.
3. It has 3G, the iPhone doesn’t.
4. You can get the Nokia N95 for free on contract. The iPhone costs £269 and at least £35 a month for 18 months.

Hmmm, I’m sure when I started thinking about this article in my head the Nokia N95 had more positive points. However every time I see the iPhone advertised on TV and how cool the interface looks - I want it a little more.

The primary use of either an iPhone or Nokia N95 for me would be for collecting email and web browsing. And for both I think the iPhone is the winner. Plus if I can use it as an iPod too then all the better. Plus it just looks so much better doesn’t it? The Nokia N95 just looks chunky and frumpy in comparison.

What do you think? Have I missed anything off either of my lists? Will you be buying an iPhone this Friday from 6.02pm? BTW why 6.02pm and not 6pm or 6.01pm or even 9am? Whats all that about?

So which mobile phone would you get?

For me there is no comparison. I know a few people with the N95 - it’s big, ugly, has clunky software…

Software is something Apple do very well. The iPhone is a clear winner there. It is also a winner on looks. Features, not so. Yet.

I am due an upgrade which I usually pounce on to get the latest phone available but I’m holding out for the New Year. I will put a friendly bet that in January, a new iPhone will be announced that has 3G and GPS.

So, in short, I say get the iPhone in a few months time.

I’ve read one review that says if you need to remove/ replace the iPhone SIM or battery for whatever reason you have to send it back to Apple.

The iPhone may be slimmer, but it’s much taller too, taking up more space in your pocket. Also you can’t underestimate the impact of the iPhone’s poor camera. 2MP really is bad in this day and age, and it doesn’t do video.

If music was your primary reason for having a phone, then the iPhone maybe worth it (personally I’d go for a Sony) but for Internet and a camera the N95 can’t be beat.

i’m in the same boat at the moment, the iphone is beautiful, but after the novelty wears off, i think i would miss the features of the nokia - gps especially. I also feel the iphone is quite big, i always have my phone in my pocket and would be a bit worried about the iphone and my keys having a disagreement! I would like to see RIM take note, and bring out a blackberry with a decent browser, and better battery…

here was a review on Five’s The Gadget Show last week comparing the iPhone to the Nokia N95. There’s some blurb about it over at http://gadgetshow.five.tv/jsp/5gsmain.jsp?lnk=401&featureid=454&pageid=-1&show=s7e1&section=Features though there were more opinions expressed in the program than on the site.

The upshot was that the iPhone has less features than the N95. It can’t shoot videos for instance. However, they did say the iPhone was by far the best looking and it had some novel features.

6.02pm ….. erm ‘cos the iphone is only available on the O2 network.

I’m not going to buy an iphone but it IS one smart looking gadget.

From these 2 I would get Iphone. It has cool, big touchscreen.

  8. chromate says:

The iPhone looks cool. But feature wise, it’s left severely wanting, compared to other phones.

My brother just got the LG KU990 Viewty. Now, anyone considering the iPhone should definitely check the Viewty out… Big touchscreen, better battery, excellent 5MP camera, shoot video (120fps), great web browser, and it also looks cool!

IMO, the iPhone is over priced and lacking spec. Not being able to get the battery / sim out and being locked to one network - well that’s all just typical Apple.

Also the new n95 has 8gb internal memory.
Design wise the iPhone wins hands down for me, but overall I’d have to go with the n95 as it’s not restricted to one network and is much cheaper.

  10. hobbsy says:

I’m in the same position as you Kieron, trying to weigh up the iPhone or the new 8gb N95. I think I’m swaying towards the Nokia as I’ve recently ditched iTunes (replaced it with MediaMonkey & Rockbox on my iPod) and don’t want to have to go back. I’d prefer just to drag and drop my mp3s and keep my own logical folder structure.

Are you sure about the 8hours (iPhone) vs 4hours (N95) talk time?

The Gadget Show “review” was a joke… hardly an indepth comparison of the two phones

Also, if you buy an iPhone (and don’t jailbreak it), you’re tied into a 18-month contract … it seems a strong possibility there will be a v2 iPhone released within the next 6 months

Have you considered the TYTN v2 ?

  11. kevin says:

Battery is fixed on ipone, like the itunes will run out in a year or two and then you got to get a new phone, My ipod goes the same way every year, its like a ticking bomb.

    Nokia n95 for me.

One side of my brain says don’t buy the iPhone, the says ooh sexy .. sod the stats, buy it and look cool!

  13. Rob Berrisford says:

I bought the N95 last year and i can’t wait to get rid of it.

The camera is good, but the GPS flat out doesnt work.

I would get a blackberry curve and an ipod touch.

  14. Free PS3s - James Jenkins-Yates (1 comments.) says:

The iPhone is going to be lanuched in an arrogant and monopolistic way, which shouldn’t be allowed in the UK, it is important to allow a free market, without restrictions to encourage competition so the market can develop and so that the consumer gets a better deal, the actions of apple are purely monopolistic and should be outlawed under UK law to protect consumers.

  15. steve (1 comments.) says:

One thing i really love about smart phones is the ability to
surf the net and gain remote access to my computers. I cant believe apple have not included 3G - thats the dealbreaker for me.
I thought that the Usp for smart phones was internet access yet the n95 does not have a qwerty keyboard.

my mobile of choice is the HTC P4550 Kaiser.

I have never used the itunes site because of the drm issues and poor quality downloads. what bitrate do itunes use now is it still 128kbps ( a long way from cd quality). I buy cd quality mp3’s at 320kbps for a fraction of what itunes charge add in a pair of sure headphones and its a great musical experience.

  16. Joff (21 comments.) says:

I’d be torn between either phone to be honest. I’m stubbornly anti-Nokia even though the N95 possibly addresses all my issues with their phone design.

The iPhone looks good and is quite good to use (I’ve spent this morning playing with a colleagues iPhone) but it’s almost too pretty and doesn’t feel like a real piece of usable hardware. I use a G4 at work and I have an iPod but I just can’t get excited about an iPhone for £300 on an O2 contract.

I’m a real Sony Ericsson fanboy at the moment and will be sticking to a traditional handset with buttons instead of touch screens (although the K850i has three touch-sensitive buttons…).

  17. Simon says:

You can’t even MMS on the iphone !!!

  18. Dan says:

I have had the iphone and i now have i the nokia n95 8gb, i have liked them both.
Apple are bringing out the iphone 3g next month and i am interested in the iphone once again as it was a sexy bit of kit and was good for web browsing.
However i feel the new iphone is still limited as it only has a 2mp cam and the games u can get for the iphone are worse than game boy games and i wasnt able to transfere using bluetooth. Basicly it wasnt as good as it looked before i bought it.
But i think i might have to switch back to the iphone but i sure hope i dont regret it as the n95 has had and done everything iv always needed were the iphone hasnt and i will miss the n95’s 5mp cam.

  19. Danny says:

I have Nokia n95 8GB and I love it.It has it all.I personaly don’t like touch screen phones so Nokia n95 was the right choise for me.
