Yes folks today is Black Friday! Now most of you here in the UK probably don't know what Black Friday is, so I'll elaborate. Black Friday is the name given to the first Friday after Thanksgiving (yesterday) in the USA and marks the start of the traditional Christmas shopping season. So to celebrate many stores open extra early (typically 5am) and have 1-day only special offers and mega sales.
Its called black Friday as it signifies the start of the Christmas season where retailers start to see a profit, hence go into the black. It's not an official holiday but many employees request the day off work so they can take advantage of the bargains available in retail outlets. As the picture above shows, shops get very very busy, with many people camping out overnight to get the best bargains.
I have to say it all sounds like great fun, and I'm slightly disappointed we don't have Black Friday over here in the UK. Its refreshing to see however that some entrepreneurial soles have capitalised on this 1 day a year event and launched sites like this. Very clever, and I know they make big money.
So what's Cyber Monday? Well that's the Monday after Black Friday (i.e. this Monday 26th November) when the theory is that everybody is in the Christmas buying spirit and spends all day at work shopping online :)
What relevance is this to us in the UK? Well in the last 7 or so years that I've been marketing online I've seen a real spike in sales during the last week of November (that's next week folks). This continues up until the end of the second week of December, beginning of the third week. So, if you're going to make money online at any time of year then this is it!
