The SERPs do seem to be alot more fluid these days which is a good thing IMO. Yes it get on your nerves when you see your website drop, but its nice when it goes on up. I'm not an expert on Google but it is definitely different to what I've seen over the past few years. Like you say though, these things usually come back for those sites that have genuine content.
