Grab a bargain - CompareCameras.co.uk

I’ve noticed a few domain names selling for way below their market value lately, well I certainly think they were good purchases. For example:

Competitions.co.uk - £5.5k
Directors.co.uk - £3k
Promotions.co.uk - £2650
Pcs.co.uk - £5k

All of the above were absolute bargains I believe, especially competitions.co.uk which will make a return staright away based purely in type-in traffic.

Anyway I spotted this auction the other day for CompareCameras.co.uk which is only at £300, with the reserve already met. While the name isn’t as generic as my examples above it’s perfect for capturing traffic from users typing “compare cameras” into Google. There are also tons of electronics and specialised digital camera merchants offering decent commissions so no problem monetising it.

Nice post Kieron - I would agree that prices do seem low especially on the examples you posted. I think comparelaptops.co.uk sold on Sedo for around £500 last week so I wonder if comparecameras.co.uk will beat that?

Looks like global recession is the culprit :). Looks like the owners of the above domains are in hurry to sell them or they don’t know the value of domains.

Its interesting to still see good value on .co.uk domains.

Comparecameras.co.uk for a price of £300? I think that’s quit a lot! I am from holland….and these kind of domains don’t have these values just for the name. (combination of 2 words).

I have comparenotebook.co.uk in my portfolio, do you guys think such a domain does also have some value?

I think the thing people sometimes overlook is brand-ability. This domain is a simple, clear domain that once developed will rank well in search engines for a range of camera related terms, namely the popular term of “compare cameras”.
Consider for a second how many people will type this into a search engine, in 5 years time – many more than now!
I think many domain holders don’t fully realise the value of domain names and as we move forward those people that do develop names to become full sites will reap the rewards moving forward.
It’s a bargain domain with excellent future potential.

I’ve just put compareconsoles .co.uk up for sale on Sedo. Not sure if you’d class that in the same league as comparecameras or not, but we’ll see if I get any offers. I ideally want it to go to auction, but seems you can’t do that on Sedo unless you atleast get an offer first!

I think that you’re right about these being bargains, especially when domains like phones.co.uk are being sold for six figure sums. I also think people are being a bit canny and are finding ways to pick up domains for less. Use of drop catching services must be doing well at present.

As the proud owner of competitions.ie (which is launching very, very soon), I can totally see the value in domains like this. We’re in quite a lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view) position here in Ireland, in that the .ie registry is very strictly controlled. There are heaps of loopholes to jump through before registering a domain, and you have to justify your purchase before they award you the domain name. So it’s easier over here to get a really great brandable domain, as a surprising amount aren’t registered yet.

Example - comparecameras.ie is available still, if any of you are looking to give Ireland a go ;-)

Wow, I had no idea these domains would be worth that much! five and a half grand for competitions.co.uk? It sounds like a dodgy spam link site befoer you even click on it anyway

Does type in traffic exist any more? I was lead to believe people “navigated” via Google these days! Certainly a thing of the past for Chrome users as typing in drops down the Google results!

Paul, whether such domain names will provide a good ROI or not is a greatly contested topic! People believe it so that’s why they are valued to highly - no one can argue they arent “worth” that much because that’s what they sell for!!

But other schools of thought suggest that it doesn’t really matter. comparemytopcameras or comparecamerasrightnow etc are going to look equally inviting in Google with good description text. Being at the top is what’s important and that will depend on how much love Google’s algorithm gives you. Ultimately determined by who links to you how and your content.

If you are aiming bigger then you might want to consider a “brand name” anyway. Imagine if Google had been called search.com! Or if YouTube had been called video.com! Not really the same.

The debate will rage on for ever, especially when many are prepared to put their money where their mouth is!

How much do hypens hurt domain names ?, even with good keywords ?.

I have compare-phones.com, might put it on sedo see if anyone bites.
