I was going to blog about this yesterday but thought, no it'll blow over soon, it must be a slow news day. How wrong I was. Today we have Gordon Brown and David Cameron appearing on TV and in the press giving their opinions on the whole debacle. Seriously, have our leaders got nothing better to do? Has nobody told them we're *on the brink/in the middle (*delete where appropriate depending on what newspaper you read) of a recession?
I half expected the so called media "gurus" and "pundits" - mainly from the Guardian mind you - to grab their 15 minutes of fame and appear on the news to say that Jonathan and Russel were being bad lads and bleating on about them being a waste of our licence fees etc etc. But Gordon Brown?? Dear God.
I've read the transcript of the show and yes it could be perceived as distasteful and offensive but so is a lot of TV/radio. Have you ever seen Russell Brand live? He's no angel. But then again neither is Jonathan Ross, he regularly tells his guests to f*** off on his Friday night TV show and gives them plenty of abuse. Do people complain? Sometimes yes, but not the Prime Minister!
Yes both comedians and the BBC should apologise to Andrew Sachs, and they have. And that should be the end of it. But no, our politicians are jumping in and adding their 2p worth. Why? Shouldn't they be running the country, bailing out the banks and lowering fuel prices so I can afford to fill up my Range Rover? Do they really need to be involved with something so trivial? It was even reported tonight that 2 people have lodged complaints with the police. For goodness sake, do we really need to get them involved too? Heaven forbid they have to get up out of their "safety camera" vans to waste their time on this. Oh, wait...
UPDATE: It's now October 30th, 12 days after the TV broadcast. In the news the United Nations say that they are "deeply concerned" about the safety of tens of thousands of people in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo; with the very real chance of a civil war imminent. But what does the 6pm news lead with today? Bloody Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand yet again. For goodness sake, Russell has quit, Jonathan has been suspended for 3 months and the controller of Radio 2 has resigned. Let's move on shall we? BTW did you know that before the Mail on Sunday put this story on the front page there had only been 2 complaints made?
What I'm listening to right now: Joe - "Joe Thomas, New Man"
Jonathan Ross & Russell Brand’s “offensive” call to Andrew Sachs – is it a slow news day?

Welcome to my blog. My name is Kieron Donoghue and I am the founder of ShareMyPlaylists.com.
Russell Brand is a new face here in the US but he’s quickly winning fans from all over. So far I love the guy. We need more comedians who haven’t sold out to the powers that be and who just let things fly. He’s unafraid to say what he things whether it’s political correct or not – bravo for him! And yeah, the fact that the media on both sides of the pond have fixated on him right now is bizarre. Meanwhile Sarah Palin, who seriously might end up being President since McCain is old and prone to health problems, has no problems with people calling Obama the “n” word at her rallies. Way to rally around hate and divisiveness, I say. But then, all politicos are idiots, so what can you do?
Dan
Your right its no matter for politicians.
“lowering fuel prices so I can afford to fill up my Range Rover?”
That made me LOL!
“Shouldn’t they be running the country, bailing out the banks and lowering fuel prices so I can afford to fill up my Range Rover?”
I’d settle for 2 out of three.
I think it was in terribly bad taste, claiming to have shagged a rotter like her. Despicable drop in standards for a BBC presenter. What is the world coming to?
Steve – miaow!! LOL
I think you’re missing the point……Jonathon and Russel aside, it’s the BBC who have come under fire. The radio show was not live and had been deemed suitable for broadcast by preoducers…. The BBC is publicly owned and if they screw up, it’s up to the government to let them know. It’s about accountability and quite right too.
Couldn’t agree with you more Kieron mate!! I was watching the news last night and couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw Brown & Cameron commenting on this and then not appearing to make a comment about any other matter on the news – murder, violence in Africa etc. I’ll probably turn on the T.V tonight and see one of them next to Jade Goody in hospital offering his support (nothing against Jade Goody or her plight just the way the world’s going)!!
There is so much discussion going on about this it’s stupid. They did a prank call, like millions of people have done before. Yeah some things might have been offensive but it’s not liek they were threatening or anything and Gordon Brown getting involved is pathetic, he is putting more effort into that than properly running the country. They said they’re sorry and that should be the end of it can’t turn back the time. If BBC had thought it was that bad shouldn’t have played the pre-recorded call then should they, then no-one would have known.
Looks like they have both been suspended …
Yes, there is a country to be run and we are in recessiion – but this issue would not have taken up much of the poloiticians time and maybe it will be their intervention that will bring about the correct solution to the problem of the foul and offensive antics of people especially Ross who are paid mega bucks!! I for one do not want my hard earned money contributing to this filth -I think many many more people will be of like mind. Ross and of course the BBC think its great for the platform to be raised every Friday which enables Ross to verbally abuse people. I doubt very much if would be able to enter into a sensible debate with anyone who appears on his show – so he is always on the attack.
And I do hope that a complaint is made by Andrew Sachs to the police which would surely take the smug look off the faces of two people who have in essence made backhanded apoligies to the Sachs family..!!
Looks like you’re right Shak. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/c425fb84-a5b6-11dd-9d26-000077b07658.html

Interesting, a Digital Window site
I totally agree, these guys are employed to be offensive and the element of danger is an essential part of their comedy. They do worse than this all the time and it is the job of the producers to judge what is acceptable for broadcast. To make these guys into scapegoats doesn’t achieve anything even though I think what they said crossed the line a bit. I say sack the producers.
Russell Brand has now quit his radio show. What is the world coming to? http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7698417.stm
But dont you think PM should comment its just the world we live in now. Being a PM has some celeb status now and thats why we are not in love with Gordon and would rather have David Cameroon as PM
So Gordon must show that side of him knowing what happening. There is no running from the fact that PM or president is a celebrity role now

Well, guess we now all know what happened. Both deserved the punishment that came their way. My only worry was Mrs Douglas who had no connection with it but resigned. I wouldn’t-

Wasn’t the show broadcast after the watershed along with a warning of what the show might contain (bad language, content of a sexual nature etc…) , i’m suprised that some of Russell Brand’s audience complained, we all know what he’s like by now.
He did apparently sleep with her anyway so it’s not like it’s a fraudulent claim it’s the truth.
I do think they can go a bit too far sometimes but I still watch them and listen to them both as they also ask things others are too scared to ask.
TV / Radio would be quite boring without these two.
I think this whole thing is silly…they’re both comedians and thats what they do..there are so much bigger and more important things to worry about its sad to see what gets attention..The target audience were not offended..its just a bunch of whinny old gits with nothing better to do who are doing the complaining!! Get a life!!!
Comedians should not play with peoples emotions because everyone has feelings. Yes it was slightly over the top and Jonathan Ross and Mr Brand should know better.
