I think a combination is what's required. A decent incentive for affiliates to push you more, and a good range of exclusive products/special offers for the Christmas period to get people buying.

It's all about conversion!

Hmmm.. cool prizes but, I agree with 'gadget', there also should be incentives for visitors,so they will buy.

I must be a bit weird here but I'd much rather have an incentive from a merchant that is for my visitors rather than myself. Something that will encourage them to buy that merchants products. I win by getting the converted sale in the form of commission.

I disagree Chris. I'm not saying that a bigger prize means more PR and more results. I'm saying don't offer iPods as everyone does!!! If you're budget is £100 then fine, but be a bit more original than giving away an iPod.

I don't think most improved affiliate is the fairest way to give away a prize either. A PPC affiliate can just sign up and use their large budgets to wipe the floor with the SEO guys. A much fairer way is "every sale gets a raffle ticket" type of prize draw, or even better the way that RLD have done it above where ALL sales get a prize.

I agree mate, they are very nice prizes and its nice that they are available to anyone who achieves the levels - similar to Prezzybox Dubai competition. However don't agree with you on the yawn factor of iPods.

I think its great when any merchant puts up a prize whether it be an iPod or a duster. Obviously the bigger the prize, the more PR and the more likely you will get a load of affiliates jumping at the chance to promote them.

However, not all merchants can afford to give away top notch prizes, and for some, its the first time they have ever done it.

Making them available to Most Improved Affiliates is one of the fairest ways of doing it, when prizes are limited. It should also mean that they WONT got to brand bidders, who would have done well the previous year. Opens the competition up to new or dormant affiliates which is always a good thing.
