Vodafone Meet LiveGuy promo - treasure hunting web 2.0 style

For those of you who haven’t seen it Vodafone launched quite a low-key viral/promo this week to promote their range of Vodafone Netbooks called Meet LiveGuy.

The idea is quite cool, LiveGuy will be visiting 12 cities in the UK over the next two weeks. He posts clues and photos etc. on the site each day and you have to go and find him. If you do find him and say the winning phrase “You’re LiveGuy and I’m a Vodafone winner” then you win a Vodafone Netbook. You get 3 chances to meet him each day, from 9am-12pm, 12pm-3pm and the final slot is 3pm-6pm. You also get a 4th chance to win each day by entering online at 5.45pm.

In true web 2.0 style as well as the Meet LiveGuy site you can also join his group on Facebook, follow him on Twitter, view his Picasa album and even the YouTube channel. I think the concept is actually really good, and I have no doubt Vodafone will be following it closely to see how effective it is. Since the first day of the challenge, Monday just gone I’ve noticed a few more links appear on the “people are talking” slot on the bottom left half of the website. It looks like this is just beginning to take off and take traction, it will be very interesting to see how it pans out by the end of next week.

For me the fun started on Monday when Fraser announced that he was going to try and find LiveGuy in his home town of Edinburgh. I texted Fraser with the clues posted on the blog and eventually he was lucky enough to find LiveGuy and win!!

Today was the day that LiveGuy was due in Newcastle so Fraser pinged me this morning to ask if I was going to go into town to try and track LiveGuy down. To be honest I had loads of work on and couldn’t really afford the time away from the PC. However my cousin Stephanie said she was in Newcastle today and fancied giving it a go. She’s an impoverished student who could really use a Netbook anyway so would rather she went for it than me. The first winner of the day had already been announced, local affiliate Dan Robins had ventured down to the Quayside before catching a train and had won. This meant we had to go for the 12pm slot to try our chances. So Steph ended up pounding the pavements and thanks to the clues and Twitters from LiveGuy she managed to find him about a hour before the 12pm slot. From there she tracked him and followed him and even helped him read his map :) for the next hour until she finally won outside Saint James’s football stadium. Well done cousin!

I suspect there will be a lot of other stories like this one over the next few days - which is exactly what Vodafone will be hoping for. I wonder if it will be worth it? Will the amount of PR they get in blogs, and maybe local news press be worth the expense of setting the LiveGuy site up and undertaking the campaign? I’d like to think so, it’s a really original concept that they’ve executed beautifully. Well done guys.

My cousin Steph with LiveGuy winning her prize!

Ha, lol, I love those kind of man hunts. And, wow, you were in the middle of two successful catches. That is amazing. I am glad your cousin won one! Well done and thanks for sharing!

Tried and failed in Glasgow, missed the guy by 10 seconds, guided like a Cruse Missile from Frasers base of Affiliate Operations right to the guy but sadly as he came out the building he was in, another Internutter got to him, still it was a fun afternoon out the office stalking people ;-)
