Also not included in the auction is the list of e-mail addresses we have collected for PopJam (these will be deleted from the site's database before we hand over the site, as will the PopJam logo and text related to PopJam).
I really can't fathom who on earth would want to buy the site and why? I mean in a couple of days the story will be old news and I bet traffic levels will drop like a stone too. Bizarrely though, at the time of writing there are 16 bids for the site with the highest bid so far at £870. To be honest I don't blame Alex one bit. He knows the site will be worthless really soon so why not try to sell it to someone gullible enough to buy it? Way to go Alex. What I'm listening to right now: Ryan Leslie Feat Jadakiss – "Supposed To Be"Alex Tew selling “SockAndAwe” viral site on eBay while it’s still topical
Alex Tew, you remember him don't you? He's the guy who made $1m with the Million Dollar Homepage. Well since that venture he's now moved on to create a new site (still in Beta) called PopJam. To create a bit of a buzz for PopJam he launched a "viral" game called SockAndAwe to capitalise on the global media attention of the incident a couple of days ago when a reporter threw his shoes at President Bush.
It seems Alex has been reading my blog post about capitalising on topical events and has also benefited from huge traffic levels and media attention. The site has received almost 1.2m uniques in just 2 days and it seems that Alex is keen to make the most of this as possible and is now selling SockAndAwe on eBay.
Quite rightly Alex must know that this story will die a death over the next day or two and there is no doubt that traffic levels will too. So he has made the sale on eBay a 24 hour only sale. I guess he's hoping for a bidder to jump on it before people lose interest.
But who would do so? What is the value of a viral site that people will forget in a matter of days? Especially as Alex isn't including the all-important user email addresses that the game has collected to date.

Welcome to my blog. My name is Kieron Donoghue and I am the founder of ShareMyPlaylists.com, ContentNow.co.uk and some other stuff. I have no idea why I'm blue on this photo though but I like it!
It’s already up to $3,400 pound!
What about all the inbound links on quality websites? Change the content (create some!) and you have the start of an excellent seo project?
It’s got a link from The Guardian. Worth £1000 by itself.
If I owned a game site, I would happily buy this at the current price (about £3k) for the inbound links.
Embed the Flash game in to my game site on it’s own page, 301 the sock and awe domain to that page, and see rankings across the board rise.
Yep.. Perfect starting point for further development. But it will probably sell for far more than it’s actually worth IMO. Good on him.
Sold for £5,215.00, not bad.
Wow – over £5k! What sort of traffic levels do you recon the domain would be getting in a months time if nothing was done to it?
Well, considering most of the links are from news sites – and that news will quickly become old news, as the days pass – in a month or two I wouldn’t be surprised if it was receiving less than 1k uniques a day (if nothing was done to it). I mean, it’s topical, but not exactly a great game is it?

I think respect has to go to Alex for this – he’s moved quickly in an industry that moves quick, and cashed in at a sensible price.
As mentioned above, if people are willing to pay the price, why not sell it!!!
