OK we're already a few days into 2009 and just as I
predicted, Twitter is going nuts at the moment and making the headlines all over the place. First the Daily Mail (sorry can't bring myself to link to them) did an article about celebs that Twitter. Then over the last couple of days we've had the "
scandal" whereby
Britney Spears,
Barack Obama and other high profile people's Twitter accounts were hacked.
Then just this morning Jonathan Ross (
@Wossy) outed Jack Dee (
@jackdee) as being a fake too. He then went on to see if Jeremy Clarkson (
@Jeremy_Clarkson) was real, I doubt very much he is but time will tell. See Twitter grabs below:
So I thought it would be useful to build a resource of real celebs that use Twitter. A couple of disclaimers first; to the best of my knowledge all of the celebs listed below ARE the real deal, but if you know better please let me know and I'll remove them from the list. Secondly, some celebs (like Jonathan Ross and Stephen Fry for example) use Twitter for a bit of laugh like the rest of us and update their Tweets personally. Then on the other hand you have people like Britney Spears who's Twitter account is used by her "people" as a PR machine and is therefore quite dull. Richard Branson's Twitter account is much of the same, boring.
Finally I have only listed celebs that I have "heard of". There are quite a few American minor celebs that have Twitter accounts, you know the type, the c-list TV personalities. I haven't listed them as I didn't think anybody would be interested.

Ciaran – cheers for that, I have linked to Barack Obama in my original story but I didn’t put him in the list. The reason being that “his” tweets stopped on Nov 5th so it seems Twitter was used in this instance as part of his presidential campaign and has now stopped. I agree, the Britney page is just a bit of PR from her management company.
Interesting that Wossy actually posted pictures of himself with his twitter profile behind him as if to validate that it really truly is him.
He was saying that Gervais (who incidentally is exactly one day younger than me, I got that from reading his book), wasn’t on as he was in the US at the Golden Globes but would be getting online soon.
I really chuckled when I saw that the Obama account had been hijacked and they were promoting a $500 gift card, through an affiliate link. I am sure the Secret Service would want to go and personally hand deliver the cheque to the affiliate.
I follow Richard Branson and Stephen Fry and obviously Jonathan Ross, I’m hoping he’ll invite me to do security when he goes back on the TV, although the watered down version, if that’s what we get will be bad, his show, the swaering and innuendo etc. is what makes it all worthwhile and Andrew Sachs and his grand-daughter have done very nicely out of the PR this has brought them. Twitter really has been in the headlines for quite sometime now. Twitter itself has gained celebrity like craze!!!
Erm… The whole of My Chemical Romance. Noel Fielding, Julian Barret, Russel Brand. Usually from them you can get tons of celeb friends.

And now Coldplay @coldplay have gone from 36 in their first three days to close to 5000 followers after a messenger post. With over 1.3 million fans on Facebook I expect their account to rival Obama’s in a few months.

Just confirmed today that Duncan Bannatyne is a fake (he outed himself!). Wouldn’t b surprised if he also set up Peter Jones & Theo Pathetis, as they have messaged him n don’t seem real. I’ve read good things about James Caan however; and he is not following the other (potentially fake) dragons, but no confirmation he is the real deal. Anyone know?!
