Looks like the credit crunch is hitting domainers too, the domain name www.broadbandcompare.co.uk is on auction at Sedo for what I think is a very realistic price, starting at £1,000. With broadband being one of the biggest and most competitive sectors in the UK it's rare to see a decent domain name sell for such a reasonable price. If anybody wants to bid, the auction is here, and no the domain isn't mine before anyone asks :)

Welcome to my blog. My name is Kieron Donoghue and I am the founder of ShareMyPlaylists.com, ContentNow.co.uk and some other stuff. I have no idea why I'm blue on this photo though but I like it!
Looks like a bargain but in the credit crunch finding £1000 is tough. I do agree it is a very competitive markey and the commissions on some of the packages is good. For instance, you can earn £65 commission for Cable products fron Virgin Media and Sky affiliates earn commissions of up to £15 per sale.
With the right site design and SEO you could earn a nice living! Might just go and snap it up myself!..lol
£1000 is well overpriced unless its actually getting the traffic and its actually converting into pure hard cash.
hmmm would be a worth while investment me thinks, but i bet it go for a small fortune!
Think about the site in a few years time, it’s a great brand-able starting point, create a site and start to develop some natural listings in combination with a ppc campaign using the domain as a great display url.
Keyword centred domains are becoming much more desirable because people actually type in the terms into search engines, on a broader level people type in searches related to “broadband compare”.
How many people type in “atom netbooks” at the moment and how much time and money would it take to create a brand? A lot of money and a lot of time.
People that realise the value in keyword domains today will be the ones that prosper in the future.
Good keyword domain + good regularly updated site + good linking and content strategy = a good solid foundation for success.
And to say “£1000 is well overpriced” is a short sited statement anyway, the current bid is £1000 and like a house a domain is worth what someone is willing to pay for it, value is linked to the foresight and entrepreneurialism of the buyer.
I know I am selling the domain and may be biased, but I am trying to remain impartial in this advice, the domain is a bargain and will be valuable in the hands of the right person. With natural listings and a good site the value could and will be much higher!
Broadband is also a market place that now matured will be ideal for comparison with millions of users looking for a better deal that the one they signed up for a few years ago.
would be perfect to fit in with my other domains: phonecompare.co.uk and dvdrentalcompare.co.uk
It’s a bargain Lee, plain and simple. Credit crunch?! £1,000 is nothing for a domain like this. It’s not a sector I’ve ever competed in but at this price I’ll consider a bid.
searches for “broadband compare” gets about 160k+ results whilst “compare broadband” (which makes more sense to use gets 2 million+ results…so my conclusion is £1k is too much especially for a co.uk.
I did a quick check and the following domains are available:
broadband.co.at
broadband.com.pt
The site must be optimized a lot. Since the traffic to the site is not so good. Lots of organic and paid link buildings has to be done for this site. But the URL has seems to have a good value for the Broadband sector. This domain would be very useful for the people who are involved in this sector.
@Lee – How many people type in “atom netbooks” at the moment and how much time and money would it take to create a brand? A lot of money and a lot of time.
According to the stats on the sedo auction, the answer is an awful lot more than you’re getting at the moment.
I agree though, one could turn broadbandcompare into a tasty little site, but the domain name itself has little to do with it.
I disagree with your comments “but the domain name itself has little to do with it”, so you are saying it’s just as easy to get the domain http://www.broadbandcomparetoday.co.uk to number 1 on Google for the term “broadband compare” as it is to get http://www.broadbandcompare.co.uk to the same position?
I think other users would agree this is NOT the case and the domain does have a lot to do with it.
Note: the domain broadbandcomparetoday.co.uk is used for a fictitious example of another domain in this case and was randomly chosen.
It’s a nice domain Lee and I hope you get a good price for it. Already 2 bidders on it so I’m sure it’s got some more bidding still to go on it.
For those saying it’s not worth the money then maybe not for you personally it isn’t, but the fact that alreday 2 people have bid on the sedo listing shows that it is worth that to others.
It’s not a sign of credit crunch, just someone wants to make money with a competitive niche.
4 hours 45 min left until auction close….
I think it’s a great domain, quite tempted myself. Two hours to go and it’s still only at £1050.
If anyone was following this auction and missed out, then please contact me if you’re interested in comparebroadband.net
It finished at a healthy £2501
If you know what you’re doing, that’s a good buy price.
I also think its well over priced… no links, no SERP… clearly not making on PPC or you would not be selling it… plenty of other “brandable” domains available in this niche that have yet to be registered… available for a fiver.
I agree with Jez, I think it was a high price considering at the time of writing this broadband-compare.net is available, which can be registered for just a few quid…depends on how picky you are with hyphenated names… I’m not… so probably wouldn’t have paid over a grand for the non-hyphenated .co.uk version. However if you know what you’re doing making the £2500 back won’t be an issue. regardless of links or SERPs.
I’ll own up and say that we purchased this one after seeing it on affiliates4u.com its a good keyword rich domain name in a market which is going to continue to prosper even in current market conditions, especially lucrative with the government drive to ensure every home has a broadband connection over the coming years and mobile broadband expansion.
Its a little over what I wanted to pay, but I’m treating this as an investment and will be ideal for a future project later in the year, as as other poster say with £30 CPA+ It should not take long to recoup the initial outlay.
if anyone has any ideas on it in the meantime let me know!
