Great article - I’ve never really seen the point of Twitter, but have just signed up on the strength of this. Can you tell me how to get the ‘follow us on twitter’ badge - can I find it on Twitter or do I need to create it myself? Thanks.

Hi Kieron..
I came across your blog from a post on Kirstys blog about you selling UKoffer.com. Ive been reading for the last hour and then ended up here.

Strangely enough I designed the Gary Go website! :) The original design is on my portfolio Just Juicy.
Im really impressed with your post on the sale of uk offer - you seen like really genuine guy, Im sure most people would have opened it up to bids, and ended up in a mess. Doing it your way saved you a load of time and hassle, and left you looking honest and easy to do business with - which I'm sure will serve you well in the future.
cheers, Steve

Good article...maybe a bit on the brief side! >:)

The fact that I heard of your site for the first time by random chance from one of my followers shows the power of Twitter.

I think the most important thing about Twitter is that there are no rules. The simple fact that you completely control who you follow makes it nice and tidy.

There will always be a struggle of trying to "do the right thing" and grow a following from nothing by providing 140 characters of Shakespearian wit at a time (more if you are using compression....oh blasphemy!!) versus the mass following techniques commonly employed to try and get a larger Twitter following.

I personally think that Twitter should be used however you want to use it with regard to actions that do not hurt people (follow, unfollow, tweet). If you do something on Twitter that a 5 year old cannot point out fault with, then you are fine. If you are using Twitter to prey on any particular sector of society....well...then....shame on you, but what part of any society does not have to deal with that element.?

I think a very good practice is to have a personal twitter account and your "persona" Twitter account(s). For some people, it might be one in the same, for others maybe dozens, who knows. I am not biased against schizophrenia.

If you are going to step into the Twitter ether, do not expect to be able to preach a set of standards and ethics that you think are right because there is no such thing. The only commandments on Twitter are the ones handed out by the Twitter gods themselves and they result in suspension, rate limiting, banning etc.

As a matter of fact, it is the individuals that push Twitter to the edge that will probably make it better in the long run. The fail whale is a good indicator of how leaving the stress testing up to Twitter staff alone has not been successful.

It is going to be interesting to see how Twitter unfolds. Is there a "Facebook" waiting in the wings to teach Twitter a lesson along the same lines as MySpace? Only time will tell.

Use Twitter to its fullest, but remember to turn off the monitor and go play with the kids.

Cheers.
Chris.
