It may actually seem silly to some. However, it can be a power promotional tool, provided that you already have at least a few visitors to your business website. It involves creating badges or images that can be placed on other sites. Say, for example, you grant other websites the right to download an image or banner declaring them a reputable seller (excellence award). You create a badge that they can easily place on their site.

Hi Andrew,

If you are not after links why did you design 12 different “vote for me” buttons which you suggest people add to their blog?

There are only a handful of affiliate blogs, and there is already the A4U Affiliate Marketing Blog of the Year, so what do we need another awards for?

Will you be linking out to all the nominated blogs? Also I see that you dont link to the awards from your homepage, or even your affiliate marketing page. Surprise, surprise.

This is just link baiting 101, target a niche, set up an award, appeal to people’s ego, create some buttons, and watch the links roll in.

It’s not a scam just a tried and tested link building tactic, but when an SEO agency does it you gotta think twice about their motives.

The awards page has already attracted over 100 links, from quite a few strong blogs, so looks like the £1000 has been well spend. https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bigmouthmedia.com%2Faffiliate%2Fbabe%2F&fr=sfp&bwm=i

Hi, Andrew from bigmouthmedia here. Wow. We were all really pleased when Kieron decided to blog about this. The last thing I want to see here are people suggesting he's fallen for scam or that we're trying to trick anyone!

It would have been easy to suggest that linking to us was a way to enter. We're not doing that. I can honestly say we're not after links in this case (if we were we'd use the homepage Flash area for the competition!).

This idea came from the affiliate team as a way to reach out to affiliates. Yes, we want to raise our profile and we thought getting people to blog and buzz around the competition would be a good way to help spread the news. It also seemed fitting for an affiliate competition.

I hope commenting here won't add to this debate. I did just want to defend the affiliates and networks who've joined in! Besides, we're not just an SEO company! *shakes fist* Our affiliate team and the affiliates we work with are bloody great! :)

Sean - you're a clear illustration of people being precious about linking out. Yes Bigmouth are an SEO agency - we all know that - and as an SEO agency do you think they don't realise what a small number of affiliate blogs there are in the UK? Do you really think that they're key link buidling tactic is to launch an award to a tiny community of bloggers where they may be lucky to get 3, 5 or even 10 backlinks maximum?

It looks to me like you're a little paranoid, I don't care if Bigmouth link back to me from their page, or if they do and then nofollow the links. Big deal. As I said above, you're over thinking it in a big way. Try to take off those SEO tinted glasses once in a while and view the world as it is, not in terms of who's linking to who and why.

I offered my support for the award because as I said above I'm all for anything that spreads the message that affiliate marketing is a viable marketing channel to a bigger audience.

Melody - "a spam tactic that is plaguing the industry". What utter nonsense for lots and lots of reasons but the biggest one is that you choose to follow people on Twitter so it's very easy to "unfollow" if you think someone is just spamming. Yes there are lots of spammers on Twitter but as long as you don't follow any of them it's a great channel.

This is purely a link building project for bigmouth. They are an SEO agency, what do they know, or have to do with affiliate blogs. I would not touch this award with a barge pole. We already have the A4U "affiliate marketing blog of the year" award, which you won last year. To be honest I can't believe you linked out to bigmouth, or gave this ego award a second thought.

Lets see how many affiliate blogs Bigmouth link out to, without nofollow added. Very few I bet. And don't be surprized if they 301 the page once the awards if over, to pass the link juice to the rest of their site.

It looks like only 3 people have fallen for it so far, you, lee and one little duck - https://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bigmouthmedia.com%2Faffiliate%2Fbabe%2F&bwm=i&bwmo=d

I don't know if setting up a twitter account means that they are reaching out to their community..

Twitter has just become another marketing spam tactic that is plaguing the industry..
