Affiliate Window buys Buy.at

After weeks of speculation that Buy.at was on the market and a few affiliate networks and consortiums were interested, it has been announced today that Affiliate Window (now known as Digital Window) have acquired Buy.at. Announcement here. Being completely honest here I'm glad that Affiliate Window have acquired Buy.at and not one of the other networks who were in the running. Affiliate Window are without a shadow of a doubt the most proactive and innovative network in the UK. And now that they have snatched Buy.at away from the corporate red-tape monster that is AOL I'm very much looking forward to seeing Buy.at return to their former glory. So, congratulations to Affiliate Window and Buy.at who are now officially the UK's largest affiliate marketing network. Well done guys. What I'm listening to right now: Kieron's R&B Mixtape Vol. 4

i guess its good news as buy.at were in need of an upgrade in terms of the level of service, and who better than AW, given their service is superb.

the main thing that concerns me is competition – I’d be really reluctant to see this move take affiliate marketing to what its like in the US, where the networks hold all the cards. I wonder also, who will replace Buy.at as one of the big networks in the UK.

  2. Mark says:

Wonder how much AOL lost from from owning buy.at for less than 3 years. Bought in 2008? for $125 million in cash , I doubt AW paid anywhere near that.

  3. Janusz says:

When I was reading this I just looked at today’s date and was wondering if its not April’s fools day. I guess we are still one month too early but I still can’t believe that!

  4. Writing Jobs says:

Buy.at was operating as a wholly-owned business unit of Advertising.com, part of AOL’s Platform-A organization. Buy.at ’special play’ of marketing on social networks does not appear to have come off as planned. buy.at is based in Newcastle, UK and NYC.

  5. Paul says:

I wonder what this means for affiliates. Will we slowly start to see merchants on current running through buy.at’s platform move under Affiliate Windows or will the two networks remain seperate and have 2 sites to login to to check stats, 2 payments/month, etc.

  6. Limbo says:

    Hey guys,
I think you forgot the most important puzzle piece here. The major network europeanwise in the field is definetely zanox. For the UK Affiliate Window is the weapon of choice but for rest of Europe this looks different.

  7. This seems like a buy to give Affiliate Window more European scope.

  8. This doesn’t mean buy.at will disappear does it? They’ll just operate alongside awin?

I think this is a good move for all concerned, AWIN actually have the foresight and practicality to use what buy.at has to offer (especially on the tech front) which was buy.ats strength and compliment that with AWIN’s strength for pro-active and focused account management. As a leading network buy.at had slipped from prominence due to the now de-funct PlatformA which is hard to recover from, but this is the best solution to get back on track. Not sure if the brand will be kept or if buy.at will be lost under the umbrella of a new brand – maybe both will be lost and renamed Digital Window. Its sad to loose a brand name but evolution is good and its the service the new company can provide which is what will really count for merchants and affiliates alike.

  11. Rich says:

RE: LIMBO’s comment …. from AWINS press release: ” In 2009 a majority stake of Digital Window was bought by the German-based media group Axel Springer AG and the Swiss-based communications group Publigroupe S.A. who also own Berlin’s Zanox AG, continental Europe’s largest performance-based online marketing network. As a group Zanox, Digital Window and Buy.at form Europe’s market leader in affiliate marketing.

So overall Digital Window has a strong hold on the UK and Europe extended now into Scandinavia – and beyond into the USA via buy.at’s New York Office

  12. Mark says:

Disagree Zanox are rubbish in the UK and I speak as a both merchant and affiliate

  13. 6 Sense says:

After read your info, I visited but.at. It looks nice website. I congratulate to be now officially the UK’s largest affiliate marketing network. Nice stuff!

  14. Yes, It’s really good news for affiliates. We hope to see better service and fast payment and approval time. :)

  15. Aki Bells says:

Nice. Waited for something like this.

  16. Electric Boy says:

This is great for affiliates at AW which gives even more changes with new merchants. I know buy.at do a lot of work with schools and charities so they can make money with their own affiliate websites which generates a little additional income for themselves and I hope this element is not lost in the acquisition.

  17. Ali says:

The most important thing in relation to this news is my concern about whether the legendary buy.at parties will continue. I remember one a while back where they below £70k in a few hours on booze, and then paid £12.5k on the ‘service charge’. The AW-Buy.at merger deserves another raucous night of revelry I think.

  18. I Like AW for their ease of use and widgets and apis services which are much better then some other networks I use but did not realise it they were owned by the same ppl as Zanox!

  19. adam says:

will this affect buy.at relationship with ticketmaster? i’ve never heard of AW.

  20. wheel rims says:

Maybe I can give them another try now. Never really had too much luck with buy.at.
